It seems to be pretty commonly-accepted wisdom that our own unhealed childhood wounds come back to bite us as parents -- all kinds of psych experts have written long volumes on it.
Recently, in one of my many help-baby-sleep books, I read that a mother's childhood abandonment issues can make her the kind of mom who can't/won't let her child cry for even a moment (while learning to self-soothe, for instance).
Do you buy that? Have you noticed any of your own "ghosts" coming back to you as a mom?

I'm not sure about "ghosts" from my childhood, but I have noticed the older I get I am BECOMING my mom :P It's funny (i.e. ironic funny not haha funny) how often our programing from childhood kicks in and overrides our idea of what kind of mom/wife/woman we want to be! | Sun, 07/12/2009 - 3:21pm |
I am with you IndgoMom, thing that come out of my mouth scare me...I am always saying "omg I am totally my mom" also when I walk past the mirror, I catch her image more and more often...ahhhhhh! | Mon, 07/13/2009 - 7:22am |
Yes! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!indeed!!! I keep apologizing to my husband that he has ended up married to my mother...but then again, if he is changing into his dad, I'm not sure which one of us got the shorter end of the deal :P | Tue, 07/14/2009 - 7:36am |

Hmmm...well, my mom died when I was 4, but I certainly had no problems letting my kids cry it out! I do catch a lot of flack because I still baby my kids. I pick out their clothes in the morning, I pour their cereal and milk for them still...and they are 9 and 12, PERFECTLY capable of handling those tasks themselves. I guess I just feel like I didn't have a mom to do that kind of stuff for me growing up, and they do. I definitely try to be the mom I never had. (Hopefully this won't bite me in the butt causing me to follow the youngest one to college to pour his cereal for him.) | Tue, 07/14/2009 - 10:05am |
I fully agree with this! | Thu, 04/22/2010 - 12:07pm |
Kim Ladies, I loved all of your comments. Gave me a good chuckle! Lately, my younger 2 are looking and sounding like my husband and their half brother and sister. Sound alike, look alike and laugh alike. Definitely a DNA thing. So, sometimes I would let my kids cry it out. Sometimes I would pick them up and baby them. So hopefully, I picked-up on the right times. Guess, they will tell me all about it later! It has always been so interesting to watch the kids as they grow through the different ages and phases. All the different mixtures of traits and actions that you never realized were part of their DNA until all of a sudden they sound just like or act like someone in the family whom they never met because they passed away years before they were born! It never ceases to amaze me. I am glad though that my kids love me doing those kind of things for them. Especially when they bat their eyes at me, say please and I love you momma – really, who could resist? But, Kim, when you are pouring that milk for your youngest at college I promise that I will wave at you as soon as I am finished fixing my youngest’s cereal too! | Tue, 05/04/2010 - 1:45pm |
